FAQ`s
- Is it worth my while?
(1) Ecologically definitely yes - The levels of poisonous exhaust emissions are far lower than those of petrol or diesel.
(2) Financially we feel that if you are currently spending over £40 per week on petrol it is worthwhile. If you are spending less than £20 per week it could take a few years to recoup the cost of the conversion.
- Where can I fill up with LPG?
Currently in the UK there are around 1400 filling stations for LPG road gas. There are pumps on most motorway service areas, many on regular service stations and some are bottled gas dealers who have installed a road gas pump. You can download a list of the stations here
- As my car petrol system is not affected by this conversion, where and how do I carry the fuel?
Normally a purpose constructed LPG tank equipped with filler system, safety valve and vent pipe is fitted in the forward most part of your car boot. The tank is a sturdy device built and fitted to exacting industry standards. It is sometimes possible in the case of 4x4s to remove the cars original petrol tank and in its place fit a gas tank and a small custom made petrol tank - This can be an expensive option.
Another option is to fit a tank in place of the spare wheel and carry the spare in the boot. A range of tanks of various dimensions is available. REMEMBER YOU CAN SWITCH BETWEEN PETROL & GAS AT THE TOUCH OF A BUTTON WHILST DRIVING.
- Will converting to LPG affect my insurance?
You need to tell your insurers that you have had the conversion carried out and they may make an administrative charge. Insurance companies we have contacted say that no loading will be added to a policy providing the conversion is carried out by an LPGA APPROVED INSTALLER
- Do I need to inform the DVLC?
Yes, you need to inform DVLC that your car is now able to run on LPG as well as petrol.
- Is it safe?
LPG has a very good safety record. The tank is much stronger than your car's petrol tank and is furnished with an array of safety devices. The gas is less volatile than petrol and unlike petrol any leakage would be vented to the outside and quickly lost into the atmosphere.
- Does the system require any special servicing?
Some of the systems should have filters replaced every 12000 miles. Every 5 years the installation should be inspected and every 15 years the tank must be pressure tested or replaced. Also should any repairs to the car require (1) Heat, e.g. welding near to any part of the system or hot repainting. (2) Engine work involving disturbance of the installation - Then advice should be sought from us or any automotive LPG association approved technician.
- What if any differences will I notice when driving on LPG?
You may find that flat out acceleration and top speed is very slightly less than on petrol, however your engine will be a little smoother and quieter running on gas. Spark plugs and oil will last longer as the products of combustion are much cleaner - this leads to better midrange and start-up performance. Fuel consumption may be slightly higher but remember the fuel is around 50% cheaper than petrol resulting in an overall fuel cost per mile saving well in excess of 40 %.
- How much will it cost?
For a straightforward conversion, costs are in the case of a basic carburettor equipped car from £650 + VAT (£763.75) and in the case of late model vehicles using the PRiNS VSI sequential gas injection from £1550 + VAT (£1821.25) for a four cylinder vehicle. Where special installations are required such as twin tanks, raised boot floors, under car installation with customised small petrol tank etc. price subject to requirements. We accept Debit cards and cash. We also accept Visa & Mastercard subject to a 2.5% surcharge.
- Can I get a Government grant towards the cost of my conversion?
The Powershift scheme did provide funding for conversions on vehicles which are on the register, providing they had met the required emissions test standards. However the scheme has closed. Some local authorities are offering incentive schemes or grants for some types of vehicles.
- What about touring abroad?
Most of mainland Western Europe is geared up to road gas - Over one million cars in Italy and half a million in Holland for example means that many petrol stations supply LPG and as in the UK its much cheaper than petrol! At present it is not possible to take a LPG vehicle through the channel tunnel.
